Misuse of resources
COULD City of York council and the constabulary explain why, on September 4, two officers were located at the entrance to Lendal Bridge and the traffic lights at Museum Street to stop cars going over the bridge?
Having offered the amnesty in the first week, the council’s coffers would have been crying out for money, especially as enough publicity had already been given to the closure over the previous week.
As a retailer in the city centre, I have been told that the police force is understaffed to deal with persistent beggars outside my shop and street musicians.
Furthermore, twice in six weeks my bicycle has been vandalised while in public cycle bays.
Those two officers’ presence on foot patrol may have prevented this and other crimes from being committed.
Hanuš Wolf, Director, Burgins of York, Coney Street, York.
• THE headline in The Press of September 10 said: “Council pay police to patrol bridge.” So can we take it that this is coming out of the councillors’ own pay packet and not our council tax?
Why is it we are paying the police money to prevent us using our own amenities? This council is a joke.

• THE song Rasputin by Boney M ends with the line: “Oh those crazy Russians.”
I have just returned from St Petersburg in Russia which has, according to our tour guide, more than 400 bridges over its canals and the Neva River.
What’s more, they plan to build more.
Not so crazy after all, these Russians.
We need to look a lot closer to home.
Oh these crazy councillors.
Peter Newton, Montague Street, York.
